4 little things - a photo meme

It happened last week when Didier & I were cleaning and reorganizing our study room.Thats a boring part to bring up, and I'll just pass .After all, almost everyone has their untidy spots in their home ;)
But, it's weird that when you are busy concentrating on an activity, the brain is also busy thinking on it's side.
That's how I came up with a meme.

All because I came upon some old stuff, and I thought to myself :

" What are the oldest objects that I have at home"??

A good question as because all my friends know very well that I neither was born in France nor grew up here.

Sigh... home is where your dust bunnies (& other assorted stuff) is...

I came up with these 4, that will give you an idea of who I'am :
Click on the photos to see closer up .

1) My oldest object :

This is a very old medal that( what my Dad said a long time ago), was given to me by Nan Nan ( my paternal grandma) when we left San Diego for Hawaii. The front has Saint Christopher, the Patron Saint of travelers ( and drivers). It is a personal item as NanNan was very religious and I think was praying for our safe trip.

France also being a country with a Roman Catholic tradition,we know the cult of St Christophe also. Many a driver keeps a Saint Christophe medal for protection in the car.

The back is marked with my namesake : Mission Santa Barbara, in ( where else ? ),Santa Barbara , California.

2) My most serious old object :

A 1984 Petit Larousse, which is a French dictionary.I remember well asking my parents if they would purchase it for Xmas, which they agreed to. I have the memory of the three of us at Walden Books, buying this book together.

This baby got me through French classes up to the end of my college years.
My sister sent it to me a few years after I arrived in France. Thanks again, Debi ;)

One of the illustrated pages; this one with differerent birds.

3) My most personal old object :

This one followed me over in my wallet. Even though I'am no longer a HI state resident since a long, long time, it is a sentimental reminder.
What a young smiling face ! I'am envious of the nice hair I once had ...

No; I did not get booked ! it was a part of the ID...It feels old fashioned now to see ink fingerprints. I remember the employee have to ink my fingers twice betcause my markings were light.

4) My "oldie but goodie "object :

This was REALLY from our car. That machine has gone to car heaven since decades, so I just left the plate number as is.I remember seeing my Dad take off these plates after receiving new ones.. I asked " can I have one ?". He didnt see any problem to that, and. I kept this for years. It left with me also.
It brings back memories of the old white Dodge that was our family car.

Just for the record in case any collector asks, No, this is not for sale !

I have not tagged anyone in a meme for... ages..
It is time to tag !!

Rules :

All you do is to look in your home for the oldest objects that you own. Just your own possessions . Then, take a photo of each object, and( if you like ), do a short description of each . Pass on to 4 friends.

You are tagged :

1) Leesa
2) Aiyah Nonya
3) Kate
4) Zhu

Thanks in advance if you want to try this meme. Give me a comment so I can come & look at your photos.

Have a nice day everyone :)

I love it, I'll do it!

I was about to go on and on about my personal objects before I saw you tagged me. Phew, I was that close to clutter your comment page... I'll keep that for a future post! :D :D

(Hint: I too have a really old dictionary and student ID... although since I'm 25 the ID isn't that old I guess :D )

Hi Zhu,
Great ! Thanks for playing !
Nah; you could have commented about your objects, but I think with photos it's more fun. Memes are a good idea for when we don't have posting ideas.
You have your "dico" too... they follow us around like good friends.Yeah; I din't have the heart to toss out my ID either. It is a good memory of the past.

See you soon.

They don't have those state ID's anymore. Now they look just like the drivers licenses with the lovely (NOT!!) rainbow to match our (ugh!) rainbow plates.

As for that old license plate-it's my favorite design of license plate so far.

Our state quarter comes out later this year.

OMG...those boring Mopars she used to buy. But she's a Pontiac woman now! Did you notice she now wears blue jeans, baby T's, and sneakers? She's hip now LOL. Now, if only I can drag her to one of Trace's gigs and have her dance to the Puerto Rican music...

Hi Debi,
I love this license plate design, too. If I remember, the one after just had a "head" representing King Kamehamea. Not too impressive...The rainbow ones are drab.
Yup, I did notice the change of clothing style in our Mom. She never wore blue jeans before! YES ! Get her out to a gig to get her do some dancing ! Phot op guarenteed !!

You take care ;)

Looks like fun, Barbara! I'll join in as well, but it may take me a few days to pull it together. I'll let you know when I do.

What does "meme" mean, anyway? I'm still sort of new to blog lingo...

I love the photos of your old stuff. The coin is very cool, and what a beautiful old drivers ID photo of you! I've saved some of my old ID's as well..

Ok, off to work and then to pick up my kitty from her surgury. Have a great day!

Hi Kate,
Thank you for wanting to play also.
We all carry around some old stuff, from place to place. It's with us for a reason.
No problem for needing time to put everything together. That's only normal.

You have a nice day and I hope Kitty will get back into her old shape without any problmes.

Hi again Kate,
I forgot about the memes...
A meme is a game which usuallyis of the a Q & A type.
A definition from the website The Daily Meme says :

In the context of web logs / 'blogs / blogging and other kinds of personal web sites it's some kind of list of questions that you saw somewhere else and you decided to answer the questions. Then someone else sees them and does them and so on and so on. I generally consider these to be actual questions and not some multiple choice quizzes.

Some people are really into it, doing memes very reguarlly.

Check out the website :

Have fun !

OK...I know this is off topic, but I didn't know where else to put it.
Wednesday it was $4.10/gal. Thursday it was $4.17/gal. Today (Friday) it was $4.21/gal.
Knowing that tomorrow will probably be AT LEAST $4.25, I wanted to save the extra few cents a gallon and fill to past the 'click' to get an even $41. This tank will last me 2 weeks, which I'm guessing the price of gas will be five bucks a gallon then.

Is anyone else now getting gouged PER DAY like this????

Wow - I came from Zhu's page. I just can't believe you probably left Hawaii of all places for France! I've had a few visits to both places and well of course I love both..

I just hope you get to go back!

Anyhow - first time reading your blog. Hope to read it more.

Hello Expat traveler,
Welcome
Nice to meet you; a friend of Zhu is a friend of mine.
If I only had the blog back then to document my first years ! But,there are always new things to discover.
I shall stop by your blog.

Hey Debi,

I took a walk behind our street where the neightborhood station is. To give you an idea:
(Bear w/ me guys)
I used a currecy converter & a US liquid gallon = 3.785 liter
Multiply this 3 times to get a gallon. So...

Leadless 98 type gas = 1,544 Euros per liter or $ 2.43.
One gallon being about $ 7.29

Leadless 95 type gas = 1,494 Euros or £ 2.357 per liter. When we last had a car, we used this one. It's a more "modern" fuel than the 98 one.
Diesel= 1,474 Euros per liter or $2.334.
Diesel fuel is always a little cheaper at the pump.

It's been very $$$ this year.
Hawaii has never been cheap neither.

I did check out Rowena's page with her CUTE baby...and yes, I believe he is a Wild Boar. Maybe somewhere he had some Black and Tan in his heritage though.

Hi Debi,
I forgot about that variety of wirehaired dox.I looked it up, and it seems to have a mix of darker colors.
You can expect more baby pics as we go on ;)

Thanks for definition of "meme" Barbara... I guess I could have looked that up myself.. Haha. I keep forgetting that I can find virtually ANYTHING that I want on this old computer.. er .. internet.

I still haven't had the time to get my "old things" photos together, but I've got some ideas in mind.. now, just need to find the time!

Have a lovely day in beautiful old France!
