Flying the "friendly" skies ...

Thanks to Farina of the Princess journals for passing on the following link.

If you are going to travel this year by air in the US, before you reserve look at :

Rick Seaney's US domestic airline fee chart

Buyer Beware !!!

The airlines are now charging for basic services . Check this out, people;airlines are even making you pay for each checked bag, each way through ! But, call your your airline company if you already have your ticket reserved in advance.
These new fees are enought to make many of you bring small carry on lugage for shorter trips.
But, we have a longer stay and so, need some clothes, shoes & personal items to tide us over.

I looked at the United airlines website ( they will be taking us from Minneapolis-Philadelphia). It said :

If you purchased your tickets before February 4, 2008 ; and are traveling anytime ; then the following will apply to check bags; First bag :$0 Second bag : $0

Yes ! We reserved the first week of January. You see, it pays being an early bird ;)

Then once we are in the plane, the meals will be 5-7 bucks a pop.Oh lucky us; we still have our free beverage/snack package .

There are other paid things that you can read on the list; I'll spare you the agony.

Holy Moses ! Those things were always complementary in the past. I never had to pay a cent in the past during domestic flights. Of course, the headsets always cost a few bucks to rent, like the alcoholic drinks. But, I consider those to be extras and not necessary.

My friend Farina suggests to everyone to pack your own meal, and to buy your drink before boarding. Unless you don't mind paying... We will plan ahead for our snacks and will grab our drinks before boarding.

We also have to be careful with the weight of our suitcases. The airlines are very penalizing of excess luggage weight in these times of higher fuel prices. I know that we will be paying dearly for every extra pound and will be careful what we bring. Be prepared to pay if you have lots of excess !

This time, Air Canada will be our carrier, to Minneapolis ( via Toronto), than at the end, out of our last stop, Montreal. I looked it up :

Economic class- 2 bags each, with each weighing up to 23 kg ( 50 lbs ). Which I think that we can live with; Didier & I always take each a large suitcase when we go overseas. I try & pack the minimum & leave some space for extra goods.

My own tip:

Never forget to bring a backpack when you fly. It's really valuable for when you are visiting at your destination & when you are in the plane. Especially for lugging your munchies & packed meal, meds, or cosmetics.

A backpack is also a lifesaver if you are carrying any fragile items. Example :We brought back two China plates & a small creamer 2 years ago. These were once my Grandmother's and my cousin Kathy gave them to me as a gift.No way was I trusting them to get through in the suitcases.

Another thing I do is to fold up my purse & pack it in the suitcase. I then wear the essentials in either a fanny pack/ an "around the neck" money carrier. My spending money & Passport are in my view & more secure.

Taking two suitcases each is tempting, but,we are continuing on to Montreal by bus. So, we can't be hauling too many suitcases.

This was me 2 years ago at San Francisco, sitting on our two bags :

Another bit of news :

For those of you wanting to ship items bought on your US trip via USPS surface mail for overseas.

Keep in mind that since this year, you can no longer send packages via surface mail !

Bummers !!!

Thanks to Leesa from News in France for sharing that with me.
Surface mail was something my Mom used & re-used for sending care packages since years. And we also used it the past for mailing some purchases home. That's finished. Now, the packages have to be sent by USPS airmail or if you can pay for it, one of the commercial delivery services.

I hope that the above website link can help anyone that will be traveling soon. Be aware before reserving and plan accordingly.

Have a nice day.

This all sounds good advice. The airlines here are charging for everything now - probably thinking of putting a charge on breathing!

You're so right about putting breakable things in the case. My daughter suffered smashed items once when she came here.

Have a great time on holiday.

Thanks for mentioning my name. ;) isnt it sad and sucks tht on top of the steep ticket price and all the taxes, they still find something else to charge us with? its just crazy!

another thing is did u kno tht usps now have priority boxes with fixed price for all overseas destination? they have 2 sizes, both with weight limit of 20lb or 9kg. the smaller box cost abt usd40 while the bigger one cost abt usd50. if u think ur gonna have excess, just go to usps and get the box whc is free and shipped them. usd50 for 20lb is def cheaper than paying excess by the airlines. just go to usps.com for the rates and choose priority mail. ;)

Barbara,

Thanks for posting this very IMPORTANT info.. Alex and I learned a lot about increased prices when we were in the U.S. in April... My friend from NW Airlines just mentioned to me that some airlines (I forget which ones) will stop showing movies (or maybe it was new films) in order to save as much as $10 MILLION!!! Can you believe it??
Also, my "expensive" extra luggage on my return trip to France in May was an extra $600US.. but I didn't mind so much as I really brought back 3 extra suitcases and a surplus of kilos on one of the bags... Alex brought one exta bag for me weighing 23 Kilos and one of his 2 allowed checked in suitcases had an extra weight of 9 kilos - 23 allowed and it weighed 32 Ks.
I brought an extra suitcase with my two allowed checked in baggage- both of those weighed extra kilos... I had sooo much stuff that in order to fit everything, the agent at Air France sold me an Air France "box" that I put 23 kilos in making the two allowed bags 23 kilos apiece + an 3rd baggage of 23 kilos-- In total I brought 4 pieces back to France with me... Alex went back the week before me... and all of my 4 pieces weighed 23 kilos- this cost me $400 US... but to me, it was worth it.. I also paid $50US to send 20 pounds worth of books for my English lessons by regular airmail... No more media mail- which is cheaper for printed material and goes by boat (surface mail)!!! No more surface mail... WAHHHHHHHHH!!!! : (.......

Oh yes...Grammy's royally P.O.'d that there's no more boat mail.
I heard an earful the other day LOL.
I remember (though now I don't want to remember) the trip to/from Vegas-our in-flight meals consisted of some kind of croissant with some kind of meat and cheese. Lovely! Of course, I plucked out the meat.
And yes, Leesa, they ARE thinking of cutting out in-flight movies. But with the wonderful choices they had, how else does one fall asleep? Haha.
Wallace and Gromit? Oh zzzzzzz. Gotta admit though, as much as I love Pengies, I fell asleep during March of the Penguins. I think it was that constant wind noise LOL
Too bad I never got to try Superferry-now I got no reason to go to Maui. Won't be doing any traveling for a very long time. Unless I win some prize or something heheeee. ;)

Excuse my language but that's b******t. Charging for meals? Seriously! I had to buy my blanket last time on my way to France (well, I didn't!) and I was really mad. It's cold in the plane and providing blankets is part of the service, isn't it?

For the luggage, I see people checking in these huge suitcases and sometimes I think they are a bit crazy... I understand if you spent a long time abroad (or are going to) or travel as a family, but I see people checking in the weirdest thing.

That said, checking bags is a normal thing... I don't think they should charge under 20kg of luggage. My backpack usually weights about 13kg max (that's how much I can carry!) and it's quite a lot. Almost two like that should be enough, no?

I've been trying to avoid American airlines in general for a few years now. I find the service terrible... I understand you might don't have the choice for domestic flights though.

Hi everyone,

Mereid-I'm glad to pass on the news. Very sorry to hear about your daughter's damaged items.
As a rule of thumb, bagage is not treated gently, so take the hint...
We still have less than 2 months before traveling; Thanks for your vacation wishes.

Farina- I'm like that; I give credit where it's due.It just shocked me! Yes, we already pay more expensive prices; and now this?!
I didn't know about those fixed price Priority boxes. It is good to know; just in case. Thanks again ;)

Hey Leesa,
Yes; you both learned all about the penalties for excess.Everyone chooses what they bring & if they are willing to pay extra.I remember everything that you guys paid to send your excess !!
Cutting out the films? That's really radical !

Hi Debi,
He He; when Mom gives an earful, she doesn't just give half portion !That stinks about boat mail but that's how it goes now.
In Domestic flights, I rarely rent the headphones. But, some peeps will be dissapointed FOR SURE.

Salut Zhu,
Yeah; agree; it really sucks.Basic things !The right to a meal,a blanket and check in, etc.

That's great that you can carry so many kg on your back! We don't have that practice, so we have our 2 trusted bags. Our backpack is a small one,for utility purposes
But, it does help a lot.
I always take a judicous choice of clothing; less is more. And keeping a little extra space " just in case " and trying to be reasonable with the shopping.
YES ! Service has been going downhill on US carriers for a long while. Money, money,money...

It's been awhile. Everybody's traveling except for me.

My husband will be wrapping up a three month visit to India in the end of August. We are starting an organic dairy farm and hopefully clean fuel alternatives.

Because his flight was international he was able to have two bags but the weight restrictions were lowered. Real tough for internationals. You go home, you bring gifts and not local readily available supplies.

It's so nice to read you again.

You spoke about mail, I never got around to sending out the second copy. I'll sending off tons this weekend and guess what's out for tomorrow.

In light and love

Danielle

Hi Danielle,
How are you ?
So nice to keep in touch with you.
That is so promising for your upcoming business ventures in India. But all that aside, I'm sure that you miss your hubby.India is a long ways from LV.
Maybe the next time, you will be there with your hubby ! I know how you dream of going there.

I think that somewhere, your CD that you sent was lost. It's OK;you don't have to bother for a second.I'll leave it up to you. Now that surface mail is gone, it's airmail.

You take care; I enjoyed haering from you.
Big hugs xxxxx

Hi Debi,
That's pretty awesome; an organic dairy farm ! It's the first time I have heard from her in months. But like I say, everyone has their life. No problemo.
