Day 28 : Rainbow people
(Borrowed image of a rainbow over Kauai)
I'll say that since that I have began blogging in 2006, something new was born in me...
The new friendships, blog visits and exchanges have exposed me once again to U.S. Politics. After so many years with just hardly winking an eye the mornings after U.S elections.Even when I lived in Hawaii, I was not what you would called "politically engaged".
Even when we received our first Internet connection, I did not exactly run & look at Political websites !
A few of my friends often blog about politics. So, when I would mosey over to their blogs, I could not help but to get "involved " too. For the moment however being involved just means thinking, reading and yes, voting. This year, I cast my first vote in over 20 years . Because I have been living in France since 1990.
Yes; you have to start back up somewhere...
I do think that this was an important transition for me and I'm rather proud of this vote !
Especially when the Democratic candidate happens to be born in your hometown and is one of the :
RAINBOW PEOPLE.
Anyone who has lived in Hawaii will understand what I'm talking about. Hawaii is one of the most unique places where people of all races mix and live together so closely.Everyone is different, and you meet all the time people who are called in Hawaii " mixed. "
My best friend in high school was Hawaiian-Chinese; my neighbors were haole (white),Hawaiian-Chinese,or Filipino. And I also, have been with people of so many ethnic backgrounds. After awhile, everyone seems to melt and blend into one big rainbow.
And it"s "No beeg ting"/ No big thing !
You can used the word mixed on me also, because I'm of mixed background.Like you could see in my vintage photos in the last weeks, my Dad is of White (Irish & Danish) descent and my Mom is pure Japanese.
Everyone living together.
That's how I grew up, and my tolerance and openness to different peoples grew up alongside me too.
In Hawaii, there are no ghettos,no segregation,or boundaries of any type...
And these values have left Hawaii with me .
And I'm more than sure that Mr Obama has been also positively influenced by his childhood home. He is going to need this ability to work closely with and for Americans of all ethnic backgrounds. Because the work is going to be hard and time as always is counted.
You have a big job ahead of you, bruddah...
I'm so looking forward to catching the Presidential Inauguration and have marked my 2009 calendar for Tuesday 20 January,2009. I was looking for details about this special day. I found a website that gave a myriad of details on the day.
Check out the link to About dot com HERE .
There may be better sources elsewhere, but I was just wanting the details for this big day.
Seeing that the inauguration should be starting at Noon EST, there are + 5 hours difference with Paris. So, I can watch the ceremony either on CNN or on French TV .
I will be there with bells on !!!
I'm so looking forward to this day...

the way I see things, had Obama been raised in any state other than Hawaii state, I doubt Obama would be where he is today. Obama's inauguration is even more historical because likely he will be the only black person elected to lead a non-black nation, pending, of course, a repeat in the US.
AMEN, sista!!! I can't wait!!!
Hi Ron,
Aloha ! Thanks for your visit ;)
Yes, Obama did have that untypical background compared to a mainland born candidate.Very untypical and curiosity creates interest.
Historical is a word that I would use to talk about the upcoming Inauguaration too .
Leesa-I know how much you are waiting for this day too.So, leave a hole in your teaching agenda if you can possibly do... or at least program your recorder if you can't !!

Hi Barb!
WOW...what a fascinating post!
I had no idea about the wonderful openess in Hawaii!
And..."In Hawaii, there are no ghettos,no segregation,or boundaries of any type..."
That's INCREDIBLE!
(and as it SHOULD be everywhere!)
And like you too, I've never been more involved with politics than this past year. This was SUCH an important election and I am SOOOOOOO happy with the outcome!
And so is PHILLY!!
You GO, OBAMA!
Thanks for a great share, Barb!

Hi Ronnie,
I would gauarentee you; if you took a sabbatical off for a year ( say a rich relative leaves you a heritage !) to live in Hawaii, you would see what I'm talking about.
I know that I grew up in the best place on earth.
One wish for Philly... that the peeps would mix and mingle in such a way.
See you very soon.
